Discipline is something done For a student, not To them!
At Genesee Hill we recognize that school is a time when students begin to learn to take on more responsibilities and to make increasingly important choices about their own behavior and academics. We know that children need guidance and experience to make wise choices. Students make mistakes, and we allow for that, encouraging them to Learn from their mistakes.
Our discipline system works on a scale that increases consequences each time a student is sent into the office by a staff member. As a school our focus is on the individual students and typically does not involve full classroom punishments. Consequences should primarily be classroom based but could move from a short-term plan with an administrator, to planned/intensive work with our counselor, to aligned communication from school to home.
Level 1
Behaviors
- Disruptive classroom behavior
- Hallway disruptive behavior
- Running
- Cursing or inappropriate talk
- Possession of prohibited items
- Not following directions
- Cheating
- Using school computer, phone, cell phone or other electronic devices without permission
- Unsafe behavior (throwing objects)
- Lying
- Not respecting physical space (hitting, pushing)
Consequences
Staff Response, choose from:
- Student-teacher conference
- Teacher directed recess problem solving
- Parent/Guardian Contact
- Refer to Counselor
- Student reflection
- Making amends
- Apology letter
- Time out by working in a cohort classroom
* These prohibited items will be confiscated, and student must retrieve them from an administrator, after second offense parent/guardian must come to school
Level 2
Behaviors
- Continuing level 1 behavior
- Chronic and/or severe disruptive behavior
- Directed cursing and abusive language/gestures
- Abuse of school and other’s property
- Leaving the classroom without permission
- Refusal to hand over prohibited items to a staff member
- Horseplay or rough or dangerous behavior
- Small time theft

- Parent/Guardian Contact
and choose from:
- Student-teacher conference
- Teacher or Administrator directed recess problem solving
- Refer to Counselor
- Refer to Solution Center
- Office referral
Level 3
Behaviors
- Continuing or severe level 2 behavior
- Verbal disrespect to a teacher arguing, yelling, cursing
- Physically aggressive behavior
- Irreparable vandalism
- Engaging in behavior which creates substantial risk of injury
- Threatening violence with clear intent
- Bullying behavior
- Using slurs based on race, ethnicity, color origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability
- Sexual (verbal or written) harassment
Consequences
Staff Response
- Immediate removal from classroom to main office with referral
- Parent/Guardian Contact
Administration will:
- Parent/guardian contact
- Administrative conference with student
- Administrator assigned restrictions
Administration can provide:
- Individual Intervention Plan
- Restorative Plan
Counselor may also:
- Conference with student and/or guardian
- Outside referral
Level 4
Behaviors
- Continuing level 3 behavior
- Physical fighting
- Weapons
- Sexual (physical) harassment
- Big Time Theft
- Arson
Consequences
Staff Response
- Immediate removal from classroom to main office with referral
- Parent/Guardian Contact
Administration will:
- Parent/guardian contact
- Administrative conference with student
- Individual Intervention Plan
- Administrator assigned restrictions
Counselor may also:
- Conference with student and/or guardian
Outside referral
